TD-SCDMA Tracker: Shaanxi to see Phase 2 & 3 rollout by August

Details of the third round of China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network construction continue to trickle out. Reports indicate that China Mobile plans a RMB1.7 billion, two-stage network build-out for Shaanxi province.

The first stage will cost RMB1 billion to install 500 macro base stations and 430 indoor base stations in Xian. The goal is to have them online by May 17, which is World Telecommunications Day. It’s also the day that competitor China Unicom will formally inaugurate its 3G network.

The Xian build-out is part of China Mobile’s nationwide Phase 2 rollout, which expands TD-SCDMA coverage from 10 cities to 38 cities, including all provincial capitals like Xian.

Originally, Phase 3 network construction was planned for 2010, the goal being to expand China Mobile’s 3G network to more than 150 additional cities. That’s being pulled in to accelerate the rollout and stimulate the economy.

In Shaanxi, that means China Mobile will allocate another RMB700 million this summer to install 519 outdoor base stations and 163 indoor stations across several other provincial cities, including Xianyang, Baoji, Weinan, Yulin, Yan’an, Tongchuan, Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo. They are scheduled to come online August 30.
