Chongqing snares $2bn for TD-SCDMA development base

The black sheep of the 3G family marches on. Last week, TD-SCDMA figured prominently in the news with several R&D deals signed that aim to fast-track the commercialization of TD-SCDMA handsets by boosting short-term product development and long-term research capability. It’s not a game changer, for now, but will be a long-term positive for the fledgling technology, which is suffering mightily from a lack of competitive handsets.

Here are some English and Chinese articles that will bring you up to speed. The last link is about the city of Chongqing’s Chongyou IT – one of the earliest domestic company’s to engage in TD R&D – cooperating on handset chip development with Infineon Technologies, Synopsys and Verisilicon. Details are scarce, which means it will take awhile for this project to yield anything meaningful.
