Gorge-yourself 3G data signals harsh competition to come

China Mobile’s Beijing subsidiary is the first one to start sliding down a slippery slope to profit margin oblivion. It’s offering an all-you-can-eat mobile broadband package for RMB560 ($82) that lasts seven months, hoping this will help fend off increasing competition from China Telecom and China Unicom. Yeah, right.

Here’s the take from Interfax-China:

The seven-month service package is priced at RMB560 ($82.04). Users will not be subject to mobile Internet data use limitations when using services in their registered areas, and will have a 350 MB roaming data allowance. It is the first mobile Internet package to be offered in China that does not cap the amount of data users can download. China Mobile previously launched five monthly mobile broadband packages, which ranged from RMB5 ($0.73) for 30 MB traffic up to RMB200 ($29.3) for 5 GB.

Currently, China Telecom has a RMB960 ($140.18) seven-month mobile broadband package that allows 300 hours of usage in the area the package was registered in and five hours of roaming usage per month. China Unicom has yet to launch its mobile broadband service plan.
