Huawei looks to challenge Mediatek in handset chip market

Taiwan's Mediatek Inc dominates the white-box handset market in China by offering simple, turnkey solutions that allow clients to move product into the market quickly. Huawei subsidiary HiSilicon wants to get some of the action, too, with its K3 chips for smartphones. If Huawei is to compete, it will have to do the same and make sure to smother its clients with extensive engineering support. The company is capable of doing so, and that's bad news for Mediatek.

You can get more info on the K3 chip on HiSilicon's Chinese website, not the English site. A recent report in Taiwan's Commercial Times said the chip has been under development since 2006, and will cost between US$40-$60.

Mediatek is expected to have its smartphone chips in the market in Q3.

    Hi,
A couple of years ago, Dell looked equal parts laggard and self-defeating Intel-loyalist when it ended up as the last big server maker to add popular chips from Advanced Micro Devices as options for customers. Now, a revamped Dell has shown flashes of creativity and an adventurous spirit by becoming the first hardware heavyweight to pop chips from the Taiwanese manufacturer Via into its servers.
